If the passes are gone

  • Stay a night A room at the Renaissance Wind Creek puts you on the island for your whole stay. On a full week that's the only sure way to the flamingos.
  • Sail past it Sailing and snorkeling tours out of Varadero pass the island's outer wall. You see the palms and the cabanas, not the birds. Don't book one for the flamingos.
  • De Palm Island The other private island, with a few flamingos of its own and water slides. Its 2 Viator listings rate 4.1 and 4.2 on 1,842 reviews, under our 4.5 bar. That's why it isn't on our lists.

  • From a cruise ship 1.1 km from the terminal along L.G. Smith Boulevard; you walk it in 15 minutes. The Marina hotel sits next to the Renaissance Mall.

The island

What's on Renaissance Island

Flamingo BeachFlamingo Beach

Adults only after 10 a.m. The flamingos walk the sand and the shallows between the loungers. You get palapas, a rock wall that keeps the water flat, and cabanas at the far end.

Iguana BeachIguana Beach

The family side. Shallow, walled water, a kids' area and a beach tennis court. No flamingos as a rule; they keep to their own beach, so you won't see them from here.

The flamingosThe flamingos

A small resident flock. They're used to people and they come close on their own. You sit at the waterline and wait; you don't walk at them.

Food and drinksFood and drinks

Papagayo Bar & Grill serves the island, and the Mangrove Beach Bar & Fish Shack sits on Flamingo Beach. Nothing on the menu is in your pass.

Step by step

How to get a Flamingo Beach day pass

6 steps, from the account to the boat. The ride across takes about 8 minutes.

  1. 1
Make an account on the portal on Friday

The portal is renaissancearuba.idaypass.com. Sign up before release day, so you're not typing your details at 9. On Saturday morning the clock matters more than the price.

  2. 2
Be on the page at 8:55 a.m. Aruba time

That's 8:55 a.m. Eastern in summer and 7:55 a.m. Eastern in winter. Aruba doesn't change its clocks, so check your own.

  3. 3
Pick the day, then the people

Adults, children 6 to 12 and children 0 to 5 are counted separately. You get 5 guests per booking at most.

  4. 4
    Pay in the first minutes

An empty date can mean it sold out or that the resort released nothing for it. Try another day of the week before you refresh again.

  5. 5
Bring the confirmation to the Marina hotel

The water taxi leaves from the Renaissance Marina lobby downtown. Show your pass at the desk and take the next boat. The first one's at 7 a.m.

  6. 6
Kids: be on the 8:45 boat

Children see Flamingo Beach from 9 to 10 a.m. only. Then it's Iguana Beach for your family and Flamingo Beach for the adults.

The catch: A pass is for the date you pick, and kids get Flamingo Beach only from 9 to 10 a.m. Choose the day and the boat before you pay.

From the desk

  • How do I get on the flamingo island? That's the question I'd settle first: Saturday at 9 a.m. on the portal, 5 people max. Set an alarm and be on the page before 9.

Know before you go

Know before you go

Not a tour

Buy day passes directly from the resort's official portal; we found no authorized third-party seller. The sailing tours we found that name Renaissance Island pass it without landing. For a day visit, the portal is your door.

Cabanas

Flamingo Beach and Iguana Beach both have cabanas. The resort's site links to a separate cabana booking page.

What to bring

Reef shoes for the rocky edges, a hat and a card for the bars. You pay for food and drinks on the island.

Flamingo photos

They come to you. Sit at the waterline and give it 10 minutes. Chase one and you get a blurred bird. Kids' hour is the crowded one.

Time

The pass is for the day, 7 a.m. to 6:45 p.m. My guests mostly did 9 to 3. Off a ship, your all-aboard time is the one that counts.
